Brighton 47 vs Seaford 6 Shield/League Double Header
The result of this match will determine who goes through to the next round of the Shield competition and will also count as a league fixture. I believe a coach has been organised to take the players and a small group of supporters but as usual I have no details to share with you.

Hope to see a good body of supporters on the day and if anyone can offer me a lift so much the better.

Good luck.

A very on form Brighton shone brightly today and despite some monumental tackling our lads were overwhelmed. No disgrace boys me thinks this Brighton team will win the league. Check out the gallery.

Saturday 24th January
Brighton vs Seaford

Double header – Sussex 1 league and Sussex shield semi-final

Final Score: Brighton 47 – Seaford 6

Team: J.Cohen, J.Pheasant, B.Carron, D.Williams, P.Joy(M.Garman), S.Webb, J.Morgan(G.Hutt), D.Newby(capt.), A.Booth, S.Baker, T.Geoghegan, B.Cox, P.Burns, C.Burns, N.Everson

Seaford knew that they were facing a difficult task against the unbeaten league leaders, but spirits were high after an excellent victory last Saturday. In a difficult first half Seaford managed to hold the score to 17-6.
When Ben Cox landed a long range penalty, following a period of intense pressure, the omens looked good. Unfortunately, from the kick off Seaford lost the ball and Brighton took the opportunity to go ahead with an unconverted try. Seaford kept their heads up and the next ten minutes saw their best period of play of the game. They managed to win most of the break down ball thanks to great team work and excellent play from flanker, Stuart Webb. They were rewarded with a penalty when Brighton showed indiscipline by handling in a ruck. Ben Cox slotted the penalty to put Seaford back in the lead. Seaford captain, Danny Newby, said ‘We can only wish Brighton great luck as they advance through the leagues, they are obviously the team to beat in Sussex 1.’

Next week Seaford host Holbrook for a league game at the Salts.

I looked at Brightons match report on this game. It said that we had stated in the local press that we could easily win this game! Is this true?

Sounds like crap to me. Georgia wrote the following at the end of her match report Seaford v Hove.

"Hove refused to lose hope and spent the final five minutes of the game pushing at Seaford's defence just yards from the try line. The game remained action packed until the dying minutes. Seaford remained determined and committed, denying Hove from any further points and securing a home win.

Seaford face Brighton away next week for what will be a challenging double header game.

The Brighton Write up......

Brighton 'sea off' Seaford
The match against Seaford on Saturday 24th January 2009 was a game that Brighton had been waiting for since November last year. Not only were
two points up for grabs in the league, but a place in the Sussex Shield Final. Seaford had written in their local press that this was a game that they
were going to win easily and dismissed the Brighton challenge. Quite rightly this served as part of our team speech prior to the start of this match.

Brighton started quite brightly but could not find the final continuity required to score early. From handling mistakes and penalties Seaford managed to
get up to outside the Brighton 22 and get a penalty. The Seaford kicker converted and against the run of play Brighton were 3-0 down. Instantly from
the kick off Brighton retained possession and swept the width of the pitch right and then left to put Ash Hallett in on the left flank. Ash finished well
having rounded his winger, and broke the full backs tackle to cross the line. From the resultant kick off Brighton continued to try and play an expansive
game but more penalties and errors gave Seaford a second penalty kick which was duly converted.

From the kick off Brighton then took charge of the contest and Seaford failed to cross the halfway line as Nick Hannay scored a try from a Seaford
error which was converted, and James Trevis with a powerful run on the right wing bashed his way past two opponents and out ran the covering
defence to score. HT: - Brighton 17 - Seaford 6.

The second half saw Brighton tighten up the game up front and defensively and as a side we became much more aggressive. Seaford struggled with
the physicality of the game and Brighton started to punch holes in the defence and got runners in support. Nick Hannay who for the second week was
outstanding scored a superb individual try handing off defenders and then with scorching pace left the defence for dead. James Trevis scored again
using his pace to again leave the defence behind. Brighton scored a further four tries with Euan Roberts, Nick Bouy and Nick Hannay (2). Brighton
eased off with 15 minutes to go and Seaford enjoyed some possession but they were stopped on the gain line consistently. This was a ‘job done’
performance and we are glad to get the Seaford monkey off our backs as this is our first win against them in four games. Other notable mentions go
to Dave Groombridge at hooker who had a solid game and James Trevis who is starting to get back to full match fitness since his long layoff. This
means that we are in the Sussex Shield Final on March 1st 2009 at Lewes RFC vs. Uckfield and we gained another two points in our title challenge.

Full Time Brighton 47- Seaford 6
9 Tries & 1 Conversion
Nick Hannay 4 Tries
James Trevis 2 Tries
Nick Buoy 1 Try
Ash Hallett 1 Try
Euan Roberts 1 Try
Fraser Hutchinson 1 Conversion

Next up we have Hellingly (a), Burgess Hill (h), Uckfield (a) in the league, and Old Blues (a) on the 7th February in the EDF Junior Vase. These games
are all important towards the revitalisation of Brighton Rugby as a serious rugby club, none of the fixtures will be easy and in the words of ‘Alex
Ferguson’ this is the business end of the season and they are all must win games.
