RE: Seaford vs Holbrook 13.12.08 Shield Competition
Saturday 13th December
Sussex Shield Round 2
Seaford vs Holbrook
Final Score: Seaford 19 – Holbrook 8
Team: B.Lane, J.Morgan, R.Foster, P.Joy, M.Garman, G.Hutt, J.Anderson, D.Newby(capt.), A.Booth, B.Cox, P.Culshaw, P.Burns, C.Burns, N.Everson(J.Bruce), K.Woodward.
In wet and windy conditions Seaford came back from 8 – 0 down to put themselves into the semi-final of the Sussex shield.
The first twenty minutes of the game saw Holbrook looking the better team as they piled the pressure on the Seaford defence. Within five minutes they were awarded a penalty in front of the posts due to Seaford playing offside. Strangely for the salts, the wind was gusting across the pitch and the kick was blown wide. Holbrook kept on coming forward though and it was not long before they were able to penetrate the Seaford defence. The ball was passed out skilfully to their full back who dived over the line in the corner for a try. From the restart Seaford managed to win possession and passed the ball quickly to push deep into the Holbrook half. At the critical moment the ball slipped out of the backs hands for a knock on and Holbrook were awarded a free kick. They took this quickly and were immediately forcing their way back into Seaford’s half. They set up a maul and then a ruck which Seaford players infringed and a penalty was awarded. The Holbrook number 10 slotted the kick brilliantly through the posts to put them 8 points ahead.
Seaford desperately needed to score before half time to keep themselves in the game. From the restart they piled forwards and won possession to give them an opportunity. Realising the constraints of the weather they passed the ball between the forwards who inched the ball forwards until a chance came for a break. This chance came when the ball was passed to returning player, James Anderson, who dummied twice and then broke through to score a try in the corner. This try was converted by Ben Cox to bring Seaford within a point of Holbrook before half time.
The second half saw Seaford playing some very intelligent rugby, passing the ball short rather than trying to spin it in the wet conditions. From this Seaford enjoyed most of the possession of the ball and found themselves slowly but surely gaining territory. Seaford were awarded a scrum twenty metres from the Holbrook try line and they drove forwards with great strength and passion. Captain, Danny Newby, picked up the ball from the back of this scrum and dived over the line to put Seaford ahead for the first time in the game.
Much of the rest of the second half saw both teams making handling errors as the conditions got worse and worse. Both teams had scoring opportunities that were thrown away as the last pass went wayward or slipped through the hands of the last player. Seaford kept their heads and knew the best way to play was to drive into the Holbrook half through their forwards. They did this very successfully with five minutes left in the match when again Holbrook infringed on a ruck. Seaford were awarded a scrum in a similar position to the one that had led to their earlier try. They drove Holbrook off the ball and the scrum was collapsed just before the try line. Several Seaford players tried to bash their way through and then set up a ruck for another go. Finally Gavin Hutt received the ball and crashed past his defender to ensure the win for Seaford.
