Seaford 33 vs Norfolk Arms 0 22.11.08
Saturday 22nd November
Sussex Shield Round 1
Seaford vs Norfolk Arms

Final score: Seaford 33 – Norfolk Arms 0

Team: B.Carron, J.Morgan, R.Foster, T.Culshaw, P.Culshaw, D.Williams, S.Webb, D.Newby(capt.), A.Booth, B.Cox, T.Geogehean(S.Baker), P.Burns, C.Burns, G.Hutt, N.Everson

Saturday saw Seaford begin their campaign in the Sussex shield against Steyning pub side, the Norfolk Arms. Seaford were awarded a scrum straight away as the Norfolk Arms’ kick off failed to reach ten metres. The Norfolk Arms pushed forwards strongly at this scrum and were able to win back the possession they had lost. They began to surge forward from this but great Seaford defence soon forced mistakes and a knock on giving Seaford another chance to attack. Seaford took their penalty quickly and a well weighted pass saw Jason Morgan running onto the ball with great momentum. He used this momentum to pick up even more speed and crossed the line with a Norfolk Arms defender hanging off his back to score the first points of the match.
The next ten minutes saw a very even period of play with territory and possession shared evenly between the two teams. The Norfolk Arms held their own in the forwards but always looked exposed when the Seaford backs began running at them at speed. Seaford took advantage of this and passed the ball to their backs as often as possible. The backs used their quick hands and feet to pull apart the Norfolk Arms’ defence and Paul Burns soon found himself out in a gap and dived across the line in the corner for a try. Ben Cox superbly converted this try from a difficult angle to put Seaford 12 points ahead going into half time.
Seaford started the second half brightly and had soon forced an error from the Norfolk arms resulting in a penalty. Ben Cox kicked this to touch giving Seaford an attacking chance with a line out just ten metres from the try line. Unfortunately Seaford lost the line out and the Norfolk Arms felt they could breathe easy. They were too casual with their possession and Seaford had soon turned over the ball. The ball was spun out quickly to Paul Burns who sprinted through the stunned Norfolk Arms defence to score his second try.
A great spell of play from the Norfolk Arms followed with them spending a good ten minutes camped in the Seaford 22. They kept pushing and battering trying to find a way through the Seaford defence. In typical style Seaford kept the door tightly shut with players flinging their bodies into hard tackles to keep Norfolk Arms from crossing the line. One particularly hard tackle saw a clash of heads and plenty of claret flowing from centre, Chris Burns’ nose. The game was stopped for a couple of minutes while the bleeding was stopped. The Norfolk Arms resumed in a very strong position and went straight back to pounding into the Seaford defence. They could not find a way through though and soon made a mistake giving Seaford the opportunity to clear the ball. Finding themselves back in the Norfolk Arms half Seaford were soon flying again with a great break by Chris Burns. He weaved his way through several defenders before popping the ball to Stuart Webb who gave a greatly timed pass to Ben Cox who crossed the line to put the game well out of reach of the Norfolk Arms. Not long after this Seaford struck again with another great run from hooker, Jason Morgan. He broke from the half way line and spun the ball out to Chris Burns who burst forwards but was brought down just before he crossed the line. Ben Cox picked the ball up from where Chris had placed it and dived over the line for his second try. He converted this try as the last act of the game to give Seaford a 33 points to nil victory.
